Galveston was the biggest port on the Texas coast, with rail connections to the interior. Once recaptured by the Confederacy, shore batteries protected the harbor from the Union Navy. Its disadvantage for blockade runners, as shown in this Civil War–era map, was the port’s shallow approaches and tricky channel. Many blockade runners were wrecked running aground after being fired on by blockading Yankees. (AC.)

Four steamships ended up wrecked on the Texas coast attempting to run the blockade. By late 1864, when Galveston became the Confederacy’s most important port, blockade runners had to run a gauntlet of blockading Union warships. Maximizing chances for success meant blockade runners approached at night, using the cover of darkness and mist. (AC.)
